The systemic model
This is another type of talking therapy.
Unlike most of the other types of therapy it is often used with families or groups rather than working with individuals.
It can be very useful for people with a learning disability as they often have lots of people with/around them
This approach has been to be introduced to services for people with learning disabilities over the last few years. In working with families and people in group homes.
The approach thinks about the individual as part of their daily life (what they do, who with etc) and what needs to change.
This therapy will look for possible reasons for the behaviours being displayed. If the individual has shown increased signs of 'challenging behaviour' then the therapy may look at possible reasons for this (such as a change of routine, individuals in the persons life).
Often the original cause of the problem can be overlooked without this detailed focus.
